Andy Bate
I'm a London-based commercial photographer with over twenty years' experience creating considered, impactful imagery for agencies and brands.
My work has come a long way since the darkroom I built in my parents' basement as a teenager, but that early curiosity and love of craft still drives everything I do.
Documentary
In real environments, I photograph people through observation rather than direction—capturing gestures, relationships, and fleeting moments in an optimistic light. My approach is quiet, patient, and built on trust, with a focus on storytelling that brings each brand to life. I collaborate with clients to create imagery that feels honest and natural, often revealing a version of themselves they didn't know was possible.
Studio
In the studio, the energy shifts. The work becomes precise, physically charged, and full of movement. Having played tennis and rugby for Surrey and squash for England, I bring a love of sport and motion to my photography. Shaped by years assisting a leading still-life photographer, I shape light with discipline and purpose—throwing powder, liquids, smoke, and even glass at dancers and athletes to capture split-second moments where control meets chaos.
How I work
I'm based at Coopers' Yard in Crystal Palace, where I shoot, develop ideas, and retouch all my images. From there, I take the work wherever it's needed—loading my campervan, Bianca, with full production kit for large-scale shoots, or travelling light on a last-minute flight to work quickly and intuitively.
Flexibility is central to what I do. The variety keeps the work exciting for me, and that excitement is what keeps the photography fresh.
If you have a project in mind, I'd love to hear about it.
