I spent a day inside the workshops of McMillan Coppersmiths in Prestonpans, photographing the people who hand-shape copper whisky stills for distilleries around the world. Commissioned by The Angels’ Share Journal, it was a gloriously loud and unpredictable shoot—hammer blows ringing out as welding arcs flared without warning. The images were later used more widely by Briggs of Burton, owners of McMillan Coppersmiths.

With 35 years of experience, he was the perfect person to explain how the distillery’s location and unique spirit stills—cooled by water trickling down the outside—combine to create Fettercairn’s light, fruity, tropical-flavored whisky. I captured candid, documentary photographs as part of a longer road trip around Scotland for Issue 2 of The Angel’s Share Journal.
